THE BEST OF BB TO CC CREAMS!

No one can pinpoint exactly where the origination of BB creams came from although Dr. Christine Schammek of Kosmetik claims responsibility as the innovator. The fact is BB creams have been saturated in South Korea and other parts of Asia since the early nineties. It wasn’t until the last couple of years they hit our shores and now there are so many to choose from it’s as if we are under an avalanche of newly launched BB and CC creams!  Just as we get use to the idea and begin to understand what each one does, get ready – because there’s an entire alphabet out there and you can expect DD and EE creams soon to follow!

There’s a lot of confusion of what a BB or a CC cream is and that’s really thanks to the cosmetic companies. Unlike a foundation or a moisturizer which we are clear about what they do, companies are changing the definition of BB or CC creams to try and differentiate themselves. Understandable of course, but that leaves us all in a bit of a quandary of what they both do which is why we wanted to help clarify.

The BB Breakdown

Initially when the first wave of BB creams came out it was to combine two steps into one (a light coverage and a moisturizer with an SPF). Now however, they are considered mega multi-taskers. Still known as a ‘Beauty or Blemish Balm’ they can range from light or tinted coverage to full coverage, they usually have a broad SPF protection, be used as a skin primer, have several moisturizing ingredients and have the ability to smooth out and even skin tone. Perhaps the most important thing to take note of is that rather than concentrating on the correction of certain flaws, BB cream aims to provide a preventative measure by combining ingredients like anti-oxidants and multi vitamins while at the same time provide the look of a smooth and naturally balanced skin tone.

The BB takeaway – The uses are becoming more diverse now more than ever, but the main issue is they use more preventative ingredients to stave off free radicals and environmental damage. They focus more on enhancing the skins appearance and maintaining a healthy complexion in fewer steps than it would take normally with individual products.

The CC Clarification

Even though this is sometimes considered a more evolved BB cream, it is rather different in that a CC cream focuses on correcting your complexion versus just covering and protecting it. It’s true that most do have many of the same or similar ingredients and purposes as a BB cream. The main difference being a ‘Color Correcting Cream’ can hide dark spots with coverage – plus, over time – the base usually has the elements to actually improve skin tone, brighten the complexion and even help reverse the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Of course they also have a broad spectrum SPF usually slightly higher than a BB cream and they can contain vitamins, peptides, anti-oxidants and anti-aging moisturizers. Some CC creams will provide extra coverage and come in a more diverse color selection and some like one of our favorites, Cargo CC cream come in an auto tone white that will blend with your skin shade.

The CC takeaway – These creams focus more on anti-aging and correcting skin imperfections to restore a brighter and more even toned complexion. They usually have a multitude of ingredients similar to that of your average anti-aging cream but also have more color options, plus most have a better ability to maintain high moisture balance and help reverse the signs of aging skin.

CLARINS BB SKIN PERFECTING CREAM SPF 25

This oil free cream is available in three shades and is a 3-in-1 beauty product. It has clever camouflage abilities with the 3-D radiance pigments and also helps reduce any amount of redness for a more even toned skin. Organic Kiwi extract is the secret behind boosting the skins luster and combined with Clarins hydrating formula ‘Katafray’ it gives a continuous day of moisture.

TOO FACED AIR BUFFED BB CRÈME COMPLETE COVERAGE MAKEUP

This BB crème is similar to a compact foundation texture but with a lighter airiness. The Air-Buff brush clipped onto the top of the lid is brilliant; even though you might find it difficult to stack in a drawer you’ll never misplace the brush. It offers complete coverage but you can easily build and blend layers making it simple to decide how much coverage you really need. It can be used as a primer and leaves skin with a matt finish. It moisturizes and protects with an SPF 20, plus it is also Vegan friendly.

GUERLAIN LINGERIE DE PEAU BB CREAM SPF30

A super popular BB cream even though it has just been launched. It has a lightweight texture that glides on smoothly perfecting skin tone instantly. It boasts a bio fusion micro mesh combination of linen and silk fibers along with hyaluronic acid that provides an intense hydration. It blends naturally like a second skin with and sufficiently protects your skin with an SPF 30.

SHISEIDO PERFECT HYDRATING BB CREAM SPF30

An oil free makeup this BB cream has an SPF 30 and a special Rose Apple Leaf extract that’s proven to counteract oxidation. So not only does it moisturize, provide an even skin tone and protect the skin from harmful UVA/UVB’s, but it’s also combating those nasty outside elements like free radicals that attack our skin daily. Similar to other luxury brands, it does have a really nice texture and glides on silky smooth with a matt finish.

CLINIQUE MOISTURE SURGE CC CREAM HYDRATING COLOUR CORRECTOR SPF 30

This CC cream is so versatile it can be used as a lightweight foundation, under foundation or even though it already contains moisture ingredients can be worn on top of your favorite moisturizer. It comes in a wide range of shades and is perfectly suitable for all skin tones. Forget about red, dull or grey skin, with ingredients like vitamin E, aloe barbadensis and leaf water you can get your glow back in one simple step.

PETER THOMAS ROTH CC CREAM COMPLEXION CORRECTOR SPF 30

Trust Peter Thomas Roth to formulate an Amazonian super fruit camu camu reported to have 30 times the amount of vitamin C as an orange for a CC cream. Vitamin C helps to even out the skin tone and re-build collagen, plus combined with vitamin E they are great free radical fighters.  Arbutin is proven highly effective as a skin lightening agent which means even with just three shades this is a very clever cream. We love the product just want more shades for us pale faces!

KATE SOMERVILLE ILLUMIKATE CC CREAM BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 50

This product surprised us at how easy it was to build coverage without actual buildup. Available in four shades it has one of the highest SPF broad spectrums available at SPF 50. This product also uses Arbutin along with Licorice Extract and amino acids to boost the skins ability to regenerate the connective tissues and reveal a more firm skin and youthful glow.

CARGO COSMETICS CC CREAM

We were really impressed with this all in one oil free complexion cream that actually adapts to your skin tone. It’s a unique color correcting technology with SPF 20 that leaves an almost undetectable coverage. It has the same Vitamins C & E, but also a healthy dose of Green Tea and Chamomile Extracts to keep the skin moisturized for up to 72 hours! Even though it is available in only three shades, it does work wonders.

LORAC CC CREAM

This is one of the few CC creams actually focused on sensitive skin. It has all the similar ingredients as many of the others, but has an added soothing quality with the Aloe, Calendula and White Peony. The coverage is great, it acts nicely as a primer and the shades are perfectly blended to counteract redness.  However, the downside of this product is there is no SPF, so as much as it does moisturize your skin you would have to add an SPF for UV protection.

KIEHLS BB CREAM ACTIVELY CORRECTING & BEAUTIFYING SPF 50

What we like about this BB cream is that even though it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that some do, it does have what you need. The shades overall are lighter than average which may suit some people more than others, but the SPF 50 and high intensive color correcting ingredients are proven to  improve skin clarity and irregularities with regular usage. It’s slightly thicker than most but gives great coverage.

This product also uses Arbutin along with Licorice Extract and amino acids to boost the skins ability to regenerate the connective tissues and reveal a more firm skin and youthful glow.
